Xuefei Wang

At what age did you start performing and how did you start?

My first public was performance was at the age of 10. It was the very first international guitar festival in China and I was the only child performing.  Following the performance the Spanish Ambassador to China gave me a hand-made Spanish guitar !

What do you enjoy the most about performing and what was your favourite performance?

I enjoy playing concerts all over the world and always feel rewarded when the audience tells me they were moved or inspired, despite our language and cultural differences.  It’s a privilege to live this musical life.

What have been some of your favourite music to play?

I enjoy many varieties of music - one of the great things about guitar is that it is so versatile and suits a wide range of music styles.  I feel most at home with lyrical music - I like to make the guitar sing.

why does Music Matter to you?

It’s my life and has been from a very young age.  Music is food for the soul.  It’s a form of expression that goes beyond spoken language.

Why do you think it’s important to inspire young children with music?

The arts are a reflection of human life.  The arts reflects our heritage, our cultures, our thoughts & emotions.  All children should be exposed to the arts to discover which ones speak to them.  For me, music found the most direct route to my heart.

Who have been your biggest influences and why?

I like to take inspiration from many sources because it takes many different skills and attributes to be a well-rounded person.  If I focus on musical influences, my biggest source of inspiration is the other artists I have performed with. They all have different qualities and approaches, so it influences how I perform too.

what piece of advice have you been given that you would like to pass on to other artists?

Do what you love, and love what you do.
