About the Music in Action Young Artists Programme

The goal of the Music in Action Young Artist Development Programme (MAYAP) is to nurture the most talented young artists through training and performance opportunities.

The MAYAP was created to identify and develop talented young artists in the realm of classical music. The programme looks to help trained and develop a new generation of celebrated Jersey performers, as well as conductors, to learn to perform at the highest standards around the world. In recognition and gratitude for their generous support.

While some resources exist for young artist training programs, the MAYAP is unparalleled in Jersey for the quality and scope of resources available to its participants. Throughout their instruction, young artists can draw upon the pool of world-renowned talent available to Music in Action, including current and former artists, internationally recognized coaches, and master teachers.

Participants have access to rehearsals and practice sessions 3 times per year, where they can observe classical musicians preparing their roles for the current projects of Music in Action. They are also presented with the opportunity to participate in Music in Action productions, in supporting roles and will get solo opportunities.

It is expected that artists are likely to be 13 to 18 years old however this is not a hard and fast rule and if there is need from a younger candidate or an elder musician then this will be considered.

Each year depending on the funding available Music in Action will select a number of participants which in 2022 shall be up to 4 artists.

Music in Action will interview applicants and determine how they can be assisted.

The criteria to be selected are:

1.     Desire to make music their life’s work.

2.     Talented in their area of classical music

3.     Help needed to assist them make the next step in their career.

4.     Focus on those who are not able to afford or access the opportunities easily

Participants will benefit from complimentary coaching and tuition in a tailored programme to help them make the next step as a musician.  This may be masterclasses or dedicated teaching in Jersey by a teacher.  It may pay for a visit and a consultation lesson with a prospective teacher at a new school.  The participants will receive at least 3 performance opportunities in the year.

In return for the teaching and training each participant will sign up to give feedback which can be publicly referred to and for their image to be used by Music in Action to publicise the events and to seek recognition for the initiative.  Participants will agree to attend up to 3 events and perform when a sponsor is present.
